My roommate Val was watching That 70′s Show tonight, and it struck me: Can those actors be themselves when they’re not onscreen? I suppose this is bringing up the philosophy of acting and whether it is good for your soul, or even a worthy purpose in life. Is acting as a profession just about entertaining others? Or is the issue not with the act of acting, but the role that the actor plays? Or is this getting too technical, should we just leave acting alone?

As I watched the silly roles that these people play, I wondered what “Red” thinks as he looks at himself while he shaves in the morning. Or what does “Kitty” do when she’s off the set? (Is that annoying nasal snigger her natural laugh?)

Yes, this show doesn’t have the best morals or message, but apart from that, I don’t know what I would think if I were “Donna” or “Jackie” all day and then tried to figure out who I was the rest of the time. I have a hard enough time as it is, just learning who Anna is.
