NOT THERE YET
I see a tree
I see a house
I see children playing
Going inside and out
I see sunflowers
everywhere
And a big scarecrow
with a hat on his head
And I’m not there yet
But someday I’ll be
And I’m not there yet
But we’ll see

ACT 1
SCENE 1
The stage is set to Guinevere’s living room. Center stage there is couch, a chair and a coffee table. There is a blanket draped over the couch and also a pillow. Downstage right there is a door leading to outside. Upstage right there is a door way leading to the kitchen. Upstage right before the doorway there is a small table with three chairs. Upstage left there is a doorway leading to a hall that leads to other rooms in the house. On the Upstage left corner there is a desk. The room is nicely decorated and suites the style of an upper-middle class home. It is not modern in style but more comfortable and cozy while still having a sophisticated edge. For the most part the house is very clean. But through the kitchen we can see dishes in the sink and the desk is buried under papers and files. There is also a laundry basket full of clothes near the edge of the couch upstage left.
GWEN
(Enters.)
(Gwen is a woman in her mid thirties, she carries herself well and confidently. She is medium height, normal build with long dark hair and green eyes.)
(She enters from the kitchen she begins arranging the room, folding the blanket and fluffing pillows when the doorbell rings.)
Coming! (Guinevere crosses to door, Jess and Cheri standing there.) Hello! (She lets them in and then gives each of them a hug.)
JESS
(Jess is younger in her late twenties, she is energetic and spunky. She still has a very youthful edge to her. She is medium height and still carries a bit of baby weight from her two children, she has with blue eyes and long curly blonde hair. She speaks in a rushed manner.)
Gwen, thank you so much for hosting small group so last minute. When Tyler started throwing up this morning, I panicked!
CHERI
(Cheri is older in her late thirties. Some parts of her hair have begun to gray as well. She is the most reserved of any of the women. Though she still has strong opinions and beliefs she is more likely to listen that speak. She is a shorter woman who is in great shape for her age.)
Yes, thank you. I would have hated to cancel this week, with Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up we’re going to be taking several weeks off anyway.
(The women move to the couch and chairs.)
GWEN
Really Cheri, it was not a problem. Jess, how is the poor guy? Feeling any better yet?
JESS
No, not yet. He’s running a low-grade fever. Eric got home early, so he’s in good hands now. Daddy’s his favorite babysitter, even when he’s sick.
CHERI
That’s good, with some rest I’m sure he’ll be good as new in a few days. Kids bounce back so well.
GWEN
(With concern.) Well yes, generally they do. Though we’re preparing for a rough flu season this year. I would strongly recommend getting the kids in for vaccines.
JESS
Hmmm, really? Eric’s mom is always mentioning them. we’ve never done that before though.
GWEN
Jess I’d be happy to make room for them anytime. Just let me know when Ty’s feeling better and bring him and Katie in. It doesn’t take more than a few minutes.
JESS
You’re so thoughtful. I’ll mention it to Eric and let you know.
GWEN
Sounds good. Tell Tyler when he’s feeling better I’ll have a cherry lollipop at my office waiting for him.
JESS
(Laughs.) Well, now we’ll have to make a visit.
(Doorbell, Gwen jumps up.)
CHERI
Oh that must be Elise!
(Gwen answers the door and repeats similar pleasantries.)
ELISE
(Elise is tall and thin with a commanding presence. She’s about Gwen’s age, mid-thirties. She has long dark hair and dark eyes. She is incredibly confident and she likes to be the center of attention. As the Pastor’s wife she also likes to be in control and know about the lives of those around her. However, she rarely shares anything personal about herself that is not in the form of sarcasm.)
Hello! (Hugging Gwen.) I hope you don’t mind I brought coffee! Decaf of course! (She holds up a travel tray and the women eagerly grab their favorite drink, then they cross to sit in the living room again.)
GWEN
Elise! You didn’t have to do that! But this will taste great with our cookies! (Buzzer goes off.) Perfect timing! I’ll be right back. (She exits upstage center.)
JESS
(As soon as she leaves.) How is she?
CHERI
Yes, you’ve seen her more than us how has she been? Is she adjusting?
ELISE
Well, I really don’t feel it’s my place to share. You really ought to ask her yourselves.
JESS
Oh but please! Guinevere is so reserved that it’s hard to get close to her.
CHERI
Yes and we’re really only asking because we care about her.
ELISE
Oh well alright. She’s lonely. Everything with Lorraine and her job happened so fast, Gwen barely had time to adjust to the idea of her leaving and then she was gone-
GWEN
(Calling from off stage.) Just a minute girls. I’m going to let them cool a second.
ELISE
Oh take your time. We’re not in a rush.
CHERI
I’m still surprised she left. I thought Lorraine was her best friend and after everything Gwen has-
ELISE
Now Cheri you really can’t blame Lorraine. It was an incredible opportunity and Gwen had the chance to go with her-
CHERI
I know, but after all Gwen did for her… I mean she moved here after med school for Lorraine!
ELISE
Yes, yes-
JESS
Wait, what do you mean? She moved here to be with Lorraine?
ELISE
You didn’t know that?
JESS
No.
ELISE
Guinevere left an incredible internship in the Czech Republic in order to come support Lorraine. She only had a few months left and she was almost guaranteed a job at University Hospital in Brno but she turned them down so she could be here.
JESS
But why?
CHERI
Lorraine has always been her best friend, ever since they were girls. Shortly before Gwen’s internship was to end Lorraine’s husband left her. It was such a scandal, he left with Lorraine’s cousin. She was blindsided and positively devastated.
GWEN
(Still calling from offstage.) Do any of you want milk?
CHERI
I would love some, thank you!
ELISE
Jess and I are alright, thank you though.
JESS
(Returning to their prior conversation.) That’s awful!
CHERI
Isn’t it! So Guinevere left the Czech early and moved here to help Lorraine get back on her feet.
ELISE
Having Lorraine leave so suddenly has been devastating for her. And now with Lorraine gone she’s been contacting that hospital in Brno trying to see if there are any positions available. She’s bored here and without Lorraine she’s bored and lonely. You know Guinevere’s never been married; she never had anyone else to lean on.
JESS
Well, maybe that’s just the problem.
CHERI
What?
JESS
Maybe Guinevere just needs to find her Mr. Right.
ELISE
Trust me, I’ve been trying to tell Guinevere that for years. She doesn’t listen.
JESS
That’s just it. Maybe we don’t tell her, perhaps we show her.
CHERI
How?
JESS
Girls we are all happily married.
ELISE
(Snorts.)
JESS
Alright we are happily married most of the time.
ELISE
That sounds more accurate.
JESS
We don’t have to tell Guinevere to go out and do anything, we just tell her some of the wonderful joys of being a wife. She’ll figure all the rest out on her own!
CHERI
I don’t know about this.
ELISE
No I think it’s clever, Guinevere is terribly lonely and she would make anyone a fine wife. She’s just too proud to have someone tell her she needs a man. But if she thinks it was all her idea, well then, it’s settled. I love it.
GWEN
(Entering with a plate of cookies and glass of milk.) Alright, well here we are, now we can really get started. Jess will you open us in prayer?
JESS
Of course!
(Blackout)
SCENE 2
A few hours later, the cookies and milk and coffee have been eaten and drank. Cheri and Jess have left; only Elise and Gwen remain.
GWEN
I’m so glad I was able to host tonight. There hasn’t been enough laughter and noise in this house lately.
ELISE
Well you know Gwen it doesn’t have to stay that way. There’s no reason you can’t bring a little more company into this home.
GWEN
You know Elise, it’s funny you say that. I was thinking the same thing all day!
ELISE
Oh Gwen I’m so glad to hear you say that! You don’t know how I’ve been hoping and praying you would feel that way. I mean I think it would solve so many problems.
GWEN
It would! I’m just sorry I didn’t think of it sooner! This will just make things so much easier on Jess.
ELISE
On Jess?
GWEN
Well of course! I know it’s such a hassle for Jess to have small group at her house every week. Especially with Ty and Katie. I mean getting them to bed, kicking Eric to the basement. It will be so much simpler to just meet here every week!
ELISE
Guinevere!
GWEN
What?
ELISE
Oh you’re impossible!
GWEN
What? What did I say?
ELISE
I’m not talking about having small group here every week!
GWEN
(Laughs.) Then by all means what were you talking about?
ELISE
Guinevere, I’m talking about finally settling down and finding a man.
GWEN
(Stops laughing, it’s quiet.) Funny Elise, I thought I had made it clear to you that decision was up to me.
ELISE
Gwen you’re just so impossibly independent. I just don’t think you appreciate or understand the God-given blessing a husband can be.
GWEN
(Stands and begins collecting the plates and dishes.) No Elise, I don’t think you understand. It’s not your role to play God in my life. I’m quite certain God doesn’t need your help in finding me a husband.
ELISE
No but He might need my help in making you want one!
GWEN
Elise, stop. I have heard enough. I have no objection to marriage. However, as of right now I am married to my work and I am happy that way. Should God see fit to bring a perfectly bundled packaged and ready made husband to me who can understand my role and responsibility as a Doctor than I will happily accept. You also know that until that time I have no interest. Period.
ELISE
But you see that’s just what I-
GWEN
No! Enough! (The two women stand in silence for a few seconds before the phone rings, Gwen goes to answer it.) Hello? Mom, hi, I’m alright how are you?… No, no I mean I’m good, I’m just a little tired that’s all no… No no I’m getting plenty of sleep we just had small group and Jess’ son was sick so it was at my place tonight… Yes, yes we’ve wrapped up. Mom why are you calling so late? What’s wrong?… You’re always full of incredible ideas, but they don’t usually require you calling so late what’s going on?… YOU’RE WHAT? Moving when?… To where?… WHAT?… Well forgive me if I’m not ecstatic, but I think that this is something we could talk about, something I need to think about… No mom of course I would love to have you closer. That’s not it at all. It’s just this is an incredibly busy time for me and I really can’t take time off to move you here… Well of course Jill will make time to help, but-… Yes, yes alright… Well I mean if the details have been worked out we can just talk more when you get here… Yep that’s fine… Alright, yeah goodnight… Love you too. Night. (She hangs up and sits down slowly.)
ELISE
Gwen, should I?
GWEN
Yes, Elise, you should go. Thank you for the coffees. I’ll see you Sunday.
ELISE
Gwen, I’m sorry I didn’t mean to-
GWEN
Yes, of course you did; you always do. But it’s alright. I’m not going to be all alone in this house anymore. My mother’s moving in. Now please I’m sorry to rush, I just, I’m gonna have a lot think about. Good night.
(Elise pats Gwen’s shoulder and then shows herself out. Once she leaves, Gwen picks up the phone and dials.)
GWEN
Lorraine?.. Hi, are you awake?… No, I’m alright but you’re never going to believe this-
(Blackout)
SCENE 3
Downstage left and downstage right Jess and Elise sit on opposite ends of the stage on stools, they’re talking on the phone to each other
JESS
(Gasp.) No!
ELISE
Yes!
JESS
No!
ELISE
Yes! June Streetle will be moved in with her daughter by the end of the week.
JESS
That’s incredible. Talk about a lifestyle change.
ELISE
Don’t I know it! You weren’t here the last time Mrs. Streetle came to visit. It was a mess!
JESS
Why?
ELISE
Oh well I mean it’s not important, you’ll soon see.
JESS
Elise! (Pause, she covers the phone and call offstage.) Not now Tyler hold on, Mommy’s on the phone! (Uncovers the phone.) What do you mean it was a mess?
ELISE
Well, now Gwen doesn’t talk too much about her mother but well I consider myself to be a pretty intuitive person, I just read people well ya know?
JESS
Of course, of course.
ELISE
The last time she was here I just got the impression that Mrs. Streetle and her daughter didn’t really share the same view on a lot of things. And it seemed to me they sort of clashed.
JESS
But everyone gets along with Gwen. I find that hard to believe.
ELISE
Well it is the ones we love that bring the best or the worst out of us. I just have a feeling we aren’t about to see Gwen at her best.
JESS
What could they possibly disagree on? I’ve always thought Gwen would be an incredible daughter, my mother-in-law thinks so too.
ELISE
Hmmm, it seems to me that Mrs. Streetle is one of the old fashioned type.
JESS
Ah! I see.
ELISE
Precisely.
JESS
Humph, she can’t be too fond of Gwen’s career then, huh?
ELISE
Or of the fact that she’s still single.
JESS
With no promise of grandkids.
ELISE
Exactly. As I said last time it was a mess, Gwen was so strung out.
JESS
Gwen? Strung out? What on earth happened?
ELISE
(Sigh.) Well first there was this blind date that she set up with Robbie’s brother, Shawn.
JESS
Your husband Robbie?
ELISE
Yep,
JESS
You’re telling me Mrs. Streetle set up a blind date for her daughter with your husbands brother?
ELISE
Well I mean I might have helped with the details but it was all Mrs. Streetle’s idea, and when that woman has an idea she runs with it.
JESS
So I’m gathering. Huh, Gwen for a sister in law. Too bad it didn’t work out.
ELISE
Didn’t work out is an understatement.
JESS
(Giggling.) Do I have to beg you to tell me what happened?
ELISE
He took her paintballing.
JESS
Are you kidding me? That was a great idea. Gwen would love that.
ELISE
She did. She loved beating him at it too. He wasn’t as big a fan and Gwen hates sore losers.
JESS
Well I don’t blame her, none of us like sore losers.
ELISE
The second date was worse.
JESS
Second date? You got her on a second date? Bravo.
ELISE
Yep, took her up to Lake Geneva for mini golfing and a walk on the beach.
JESS
That’s cute!
ELISE
It was, until she beat him at mini golf too. He pouted the whole rest of the night and Gwen finally called him out for being an ego maniac. They didn’t speak the whole drive home. I don’t think they’ve spoken since.
JESS
Ouch, I’m sure they haven’t. Bet you loved being in the middle of that one.
ELISE
Actually I did, despite failure on Gwen’s end, (sarcastically) Shawn actually seemed to grow up a bit after that. His next first date was at coffee house instead and he’s never ever done something competitive with a date again. His pride can’t handle it.
JESS
(Laughing hysterically.) Oh wow.
ELISE
But, the real point is I had been trying to get Gwen to go out with Shawn for months and she turned me down. Her mom shows up for about a week and she gives Shawn not one but two dates.
JESS
Yeah that’s pretty impressive. (Lets out a slow sigh.) Well yes I can only imagine how interesting things are going to be getting. Although if there’s anyone who stands their ground well it’s Gwen, I mean she could have gone with Lorraine, but she knew that wasn’t what she wanted. And now she’s investigating that whole Czech Republic thing, and thinking of heading off there alone again. I mean, if there is anyone who doesn’t live by the expectations of others, it’s Gwen.
ELISE
(Laughs.) Ah yes but you have yet to meet the woman who birthed Gwen.
JESS
(Laughs.) So a battle of the wills is about to begin?
ELISE
Oh I don’t know about a battle. If Mrs. Streetle has anything to do with it she’ll have her daughter married by March!
(Doorbell.)
JESS
Oh Elise, I’ve got to go. Gwen’s here now.
ELISE
What? Why on earth-
JESS
No, don’t worry. She’s taking Katie out for a few hours so I can look after Ty he’s still not feeling well.
ELISE
That’s awfully kind of her.
JESS
I know she’s just so great with the kids.
ELISE
If only she were half as good with men.
JESS
(Laughs.)
(Doorbell)
JESS
Right, well, I’ve gotta go. Bye Elise.
ELISE
Bye Jess.
(Blackout)
SCENE 4
Back in Gwen’s living room with moving boxes everywhere. Gwen enters from downstage right carrying another box.
GWEN
Jill, can you grab the door?
(Jill jumps up from the table and runs to hold the door for Gwen.)
GWEN
Thanks!
JILL
(Jill is a bit younger than Gwen, early thirties. She got married at
19 and is now very comfortable with her role as mom and caretaker. Even though she’s younger than Gwen this allows her to sometimes take a care-giving role in Gwen’s life as well. She is more soft-spoken than Gwen. To a degree she is tired and care-worn. She and her husband both work while trying to raise two children. Because they were married so young she’s never had much money. While she doesn’t look poor, Gwen’s style and home have a more sophisticated look and Jill looks out of place at times. She is shorter with dirty blonde hair and Gwen’s green eyes.)
No problem! (Calling offstage.) Mom! I told you I’d get that one. Leave it and come inside. You’ve been unpacking all morning.
JUNE
(June is an older woman in her late fifties. Her hair is black with lots of gray. She is medium height like Gwen but obviously getting less active with age. She has the same green eyes as her daughters. June also has a hardness about her that is not found on either of her daughters. This hardness has made her critical and unintentionally manipulative. To a degree she should remind the audience of an older version of Elise. Despite these obvious flaws it is incredibly clear that June truly does love her daughters.)
(Follows her daughter in with another box.) It’s fine! It’s fine, dear! I can manage.
GWEN
Well, sit down a minute, both of you. Jill I know you’ve got to head back soon.
JILL
Yes, I do.
GWEN
Have some time for coffee?
JILL
There is always time for coffee.
GWEN
(Heads to the kitchen.)
JUNE
Oh no, you don’t. I’ll get it, dear. You sit down a minute with your sister.
GWEN
Mom, really it’s no trouble, I can-
JUNE
Oh hush, sit down. You’ve been working all morning and the last thing I need to be to you is burden. I’ll fix you both some coffee.
GWEN
Alright thanks. (Gwen and Jill sit at a small round table as June exits.)
JILL
So…
GWEN
So…
JILL
Sorry it all happened so fast. I would have warned you if I had seen it coming.
GWEN
(Smiles.) Yeah I know you’ve got my back I’m guessing you were as surprised as I was.
JILL
Well yeah, I mean I know we had talked about her moving down here. It’s just been getting kinda crowded at home. But I thought we would talk about it with you at Christmas and at least wait till spring.
GWEN
(Shaking her head.) You know mom. When her heart is set on something, that something’s gonna get done.
JILL
Yeah, you should know she’s got her heart set on getting you married next.
GWEN
(Laughs.) So that’s what this all about, (Still laughing.) I guess I should have known.
JILL
Well, you didn’t think it was cause she missed you, right? (Smirking.)
GWEN
(Laughs again.) Oh I’m sure she misses fighting with me.
JILL
Nah, I keep her plenty busy with that.
GWEN
Oh right, what could she possibly nag you about?
JILL
You have no idea. The house isn’t kept well. I don’t make homemade dinner enough the kids are in public school not private. Frank travels too much. Shall I go on?
GWEN
No, you’ve made your point. Still I envy you, at least you’re only hearing those things from your mother and not your supposed friends.
JILL
What do you mean?
GWEN
Oh it’s nothing, just the women in small group, they seemed convinced that there’s something wrong with me and the only way to fix that something is through matrimony.
JILL
(Reaches over and takes Gwen’s hand.) Gwen, there’s nothing wrong with you.
GWEN
(Quickly.) I know that!
JILL
No, listen to me Gwen, there’s nothing wrong with you. I may have everything mother’s ever wanted for me, but there are days I envy you.
GWEN
What do I possibly have that you don’t?
JILL
Freedom.
GWEN
Oh Jill please-
JILL
No Gwen, hear me out. I love Frank, I love being his wife, and I love my children. But there are opportunities available to you that will never be open to me.
GWEN
(Sarcastically) Like what?
JILL
Like education, Gwen you’re a Doctor, and you studied for years to become one. Or travel, look at Lorraine, she moved across country to take a job. What an incredible adventure. There are risks and choices that you can make because you are not bound to a husband and children.
GWEN
And what if I want to be bound to them Jill? What then?
JILL
(Calling from kitchen.) How do you like it, girls?
(Both girls are startled.)
(At the same time.)
GWEN
Black.
JILL
With cream.
JUNE
(Continuing offstage.) Well, that will be simple. (Entering.) Girls there can’t possibly be anything more precious than having my two daughters with me.
(The girls smile and take their coffee and June sits down.)
JUNE
Now Jill, you really ought to be getting on the road when you finish, especially if you want to get dinner done tonight.
JILL
Oh no, mom, it’s Friday. We’re ordering out pizza.
JUNE
Hmm. Are you really sure that’s the best idea? I bet the kids would love to help you make pizza.
JILL
Yeah, I’m sure they would. Problem is, I’ve never done it and I don’t really want to learn tonight.
JUNE
Oh well-
GWEN
(Cutting her mother off.) We can make pizza when they come down at the end of the month. You’re still planning on that right?
JILL
Yes of course, the kids will never let me forget. Everyday they ask how soon till their big sleepover with Aunty Gwen.
GWEN
(Smiling.) Good. Tell them I’m excited too. Mom, you’ll have to visit Jill that weekend. I’ve promised them a special date with me.
JUNE
Well we will see. Maybe I will want to see them too.
GWEN
(Starts to argue before Jill cuts her off.) No-
JILL
We’ll just figure it out when it gets here. It’s not for a few weeks anyway.
GWEN
Fine.
JUNE
Gwen, what have you done with the wallpaper in this house?
GWEN
Um, nothing.
JUNE
Well, I can see that!
GWEN
(Rolls her eyes.)
JILL
And I think that’s my cue to leave!
(They all stand up and Jill grabs her coat and purse.)
GWEN
(Hugging her.) Thanks for driving her down, Jill. It was good to see you.
JILL
It was good to see you too. We’ll talk soon.
JUNE
(Hugging her.) Now take care of those grandbabies for me! Make sure they’re eating their veggies.
JILL
Of course, mom, they will.
(They walk toward the door and Gwen opens it.)
JILL
Alright well I love you both just call me if we forgot anything.
JUNE
Love you too, sweetie!
GWEN
Drive safe, Jill.
(Jill exits and Gwen closes the door and she and her mom move to the couch.)
JUNE
I am so sorry Jill couldn’t stay to help longer. But you know the duties of being a wife and mother call.
GWEN
(Rolls her eyes.) Yes mom, I’m sure. Especially on a Friday morning when Frank is at work and the kids are in school.
JUNE
(Ignores her.) Well now that we’ve got everything in, it’s just time to get it all sorted now isn’t it!
GWEN
Yeah, and about that, mom, I told you I have a shift this afternoon. I can’t stay to unpack with you. But I can get us some sandwiches ready before I go.
JUNE
Oh well is that how it’s going to be then? I’m barely here an hour and you’re off already leaving me alone with nothing more than sandwiches?
GWEN
(Patiently.) Mom, you’re hardly here for a quick visit. You’ll be here in the morning and I’ll make us a big breakfast. If you want to rest this afternoon, we can wait to unpack till tomorrow.
JUNE
No it’s fine, fine. I just thought you’d be here for my first night in.
GWEN
Yes, I’m sorry about that. There isn’t much I can do about my work schedule. But it’s fairly consistent so you’ll get used to it, I have all of tomorrow off. And Elise said she would stop in tonight to see you and say hello.
JUNE
Did she? That’s very sweet of her. Well, maybe you should post your work schedule so I know when I’ll be all by my lonesome. Maybe then I can try and plan some projects for when you work. I do hate being alone and bored ever since your father passed away.
GWEN
Yeah, I know it’s been hard, mom.
JUNE
And it will be so much quieter here with no children running around.
GWEN
Yep,
JUNE
Is that all you’ve got to say? Yep.
GWEN
What else do you want me to say, mom?
JUNE
Well, is there anyone special in your life?
GWEN
Yeah, I’ve got a great young intern she has a promising future ahead of her.
JUNE
Guinevere!
GWEN
What?
JUNE
That is not what I meant and you know it!
GWEN
What did you mean then?
JUNE
I meant a man! Is there some special man whose caught your eye?
GWEN
Nope.
JUNE
Oh Guinevere surely there-
GWEN
No, mom, there isn’t.
JUNE
Guinevere, do you intend to get married?
GWEN
(Stares at her mother.) Mom, I need you to listen to me now, because we aren’t having this conversation again.
JUNE
I don’t know what you mean.
GWEN
Yes you do, you know exactly what I mean. Let’s just be honest for a minute about why you’re here, kay? You’re here because I am finally free of the poisonous feministic egalitarian bitterness that Lorraine brainwashed me into believing after her husband left her. And now that I’m free of her influences, you intend to set me back on the right track of finding a husband and making babies.
JUNE
Nonsense, Guinevere, nonsense.
GWEN
No it isn’t. I know and you know it. Now I’m going to let you in on a little secret mom, you should listen, you’re going to like this.
JUNE
What?
GWEN
I would love to get married to someone someday. I would love to be a mother and to have children. But I am happy with my life right now. If in the near future I meet the right person, then great. But I’m sorry I’m not interested in searching for him. Call me old fashioned, but I’d like it if he found me.
JUNE
Well, that would be fine and dandy if it was ten years ago, but the fact of the matter is you’re no spring chicken, Gwen! And you aren’t getting any younger.
GWEN
Again, call me crazy mom, but I’m happy right now. And that is the end of that discussion. We will not be talking about this again unless I bring it up. Got it?
JUNE
Don’t take that tone with me. I’m still you’re mother.
GWEN
Yes and my love life is still my love life.
JUNE
And what about children Gwen?
GWEN
(Pausing.) What about them?
JUNE
Gwen, I am your mother. I have watched you all your life. You may love being a doctor but I know you and there is one thing you have always wanted even more than that and it’s to be a mother. Do you realize that doesn’t tend to happen until after you’ve become a wife?
GWEN
(Quietly.) Yes.
JUNE
Then what exactly are you doing? There are surely some nice young men at the hospital or at your church that are single.
GWEN
Yep there are?
JUNE
Then what are you doing Gwen? If you want to be a mother, why aren’t you getting to know those men?
GWEN
(Angrily.) Because I do know them, mom! I do know them and I care about what kind of father my future children may or may not have. So forgive me if I’m not going to tie the knot with any Tom, Dick or Harry that I just happen to know!
JUNE
So that’s it you’re too picky!
GWEN
(Groaning in exasperation.) No what I am is tired of explaining myself. I’m saying it one last time, my love life is my love life and I want you out of it. (looking at her watch) And now I’m late I’ve gotta get ready for my shift. I’ll be getting home late so don’t wait up.
(Blackout)
SCENE 5
Downstage, E.R. waiting room, there’s a receptionist desk and chairs. One man working the desk. Gwen enters from downstage right as Shelby and Mrs. Preston enter from downstage left. Gwen walks to the desk and picks up some charts flipping through them.
MRS. PRESTON
(Mrs. Preston is in her late forties, she is cold and borderline cruel. Her cruelty is not so much in how she interacts with Shelby but rather her lack of interactions. She clearly has no emotional investment in the girl and for the most she does her best to just ignore her. Her speech is short and curt. She is medium height with graying brown hair.)
Now just wait there. Sit. I’ll have to fill some things out.
SHELBY
(Shelby is a seven year old girl with curly brown hair and blue eyes. She has pale skin and lots of freckles. She is headstrong and evidently clashes with her guardian yet there is an innocence and naivete in her interactions that show she feels Mrs. Preston disdain for her but isn’t wavered by it yet.)
(Clearly nervous and scared but sits.)
GWEN
(To the man.) Who do I have next?
MAN 1
(The man is tall with blonde hair and blue eyes, he is attractive and flirtatious but Gwen is oblivious.)
No one at the moment Dr. you have a few minutes. Till the next skateboarder needing stitches comes in. (He flashes a smile.)
GWEN
(Laughs.) Well alright then.
MAN 1
(To Mrs. Preston.) Can I help you?
MRS. PRESTON
Yes, I need to fill out some forms for a flu shot.
GWEN
(Sets down her charts, and starts to walk away when she spots Shelby, she walks over to her, and crouches to look up at her face.) Hi there!
SHELBY
(Stares at her knees.) Hi.
GWEN
Whatcha lookin at?
SHELBY
Nothin
GWEN
Well, can you look at me, pretty girl? (Shelby looks up.) Aw there’s your face, I knew it must be pretty.
SHELBY
How did you know?
GWEN
Well you see I saw your bright blonde hair and I just knew there must be a pretty face to go with those curls. (She reaches up and tousles her hair.)
SHELBY
(Smiles at her tentatively.)
GWEN
And there’s her smile! Now what brings you here today missy?
SHELBY
(The grin fades.) A flu shot.
GWEN
Oh I see. Hmm, wanna here a secret?
SHELBY
Yeah?
GWEN
I really hate getting shots.
SHELBY
You do? But you’re a doctor! You have to like them!
GWEN
I do?
SHELBY
Yes.
GWEN
Hmm. Well, I must make a pretty bad doctor then huh?
SHELBY
(Laughs.) Yeah.
GWEN
Do you wanna know why I still get shots?
SHELBY
(Nods.)
GWEN
Because I hate getting sick even more.
SHELBY
Yeah but what if the shot makes me sick? I can’t get sick. I have too much to do. I am busy busy busy!
GWEN
The shot isn’t supposed to make you sick. It’s supposed to keep you well so that you can get everything done. But what could you have to do, young lady? It’s the weekend!
SHELBY
Oh I have lots to do! I have to read and read a lot for school. I’m in the top reading circle! Even Mrs. Preston says I shouldn’t brag about it I still am. And I have to keep reading so I stay there. Johnny was sick for a few days and so he stayed in bed and didn’t read and now he’s behind! I am not going to be like Johnny. And tomorrow there’s a game night at church and everybody is going. They were talking about it at lunch and recess and on the bus. Everyone will be there. I have to be there too! See I can’t get sick.
GWEN
Well then, little miss, you have come to the right place! We will get your shot all taken care of and it will keep you healthy and well so that you can enjoy your reading AND your game night.
SHELBY
(Smiles.) I guess a shot will be okay then.
MRS. PRESTON
(Walks over.) Come Shelby, they’re ready. Now I don’t want any fuss from you, you hear?
GWEN
(Tousles her hair again.) Good luck kid.
SHELBY
(Bounces off her chair and takes Mrs. Preston’s hand.) Thanks!
(Blackout)
SCENE 6
Gwen’s living room, Gwen and her mother are sitting on the couch sipping coffee and folding laundry. There are neat organized piles all around June and a large pile of unmatched socks in front of Gwen.
(Doorbell.)
GWEN
(Gets up.) That’s odd.
JUNE
What is dear?
GWEN
(As she’s walking to the door.) I don’t know who would be coming here on a Saturday morning. (Opens the door.) Jess!
JESS
(Entering.) Hello! (Hugs a surprised Gwen.) I’m sorry to be dropping in unexpectedly, but well I was just out running some errands and thought I’d stop in.
GWEN
(Suspiciously.) Sure you were.
JESS
(Peeking over at Gwen’s mom.) Oh I see you already have company! Who is this Gwen?
(They walk over and June stands up.)
GWEN
Jess, this is my mom, June. Mom this is one of the ladies in my small group I was telling you about. The one whose son was sick, you remember?
JUNE
(Shaking Jess’ hand.) Well, certainly I do. I hope he’s feeling better.
JESS
He is. I have this great Doctor friend who gives me all sorts of advice when I’ve got sick kids.
JUNE
Really, who?
JESS
Your daughter June, Dr. Gwen.
JUNE
Of course.
JESS
(Smiling.) Gwen is incredible with my kids. And with me, she always tells whether it’s worth worrying over, or whether some children’s Motrin will do the trick.
GWEN
It’s nothing, I wouldn’t be a very useful Doctor if I didn’t come in handy to my friends. (A minute of awkward silence.) Jess do you want some coffee?
JESS
No, no I didn’t mean to intrude; I really have to go in a minute anyway. Katie’s home with Tyler, Eric’s not feeling well now. I’m thinking he caught whatever Ty had.
GWEN
Oh no.
JESS
Yes it is a bit of a bummer. The kids were so excited for the game night at church tonight but I just don’t think we should go with us all getting sick.
GWEN
Yes that’s probably a wise idea. I’m sure they will be disappointed though.
JESS
Gwen, you should really go though.
GWEN
(Laughs.) Me? Why?
JESS
Well you never know who’s going to be there! Who you might meet!
GWEN
(Frowns.)
JUNE
Yes, Gwen, that sounds like a marvelous idea you should absolutely go!
GWEN
If I go mom you should come with, it’ll give you a chance to meet some more of my friends.
JUNE
Don’t be silly! I would slow you down. I’ll have plenty of time to meet them all tomorrow at church. You go and enjoy yourself.
JESS
Gwen really you’d be doing me a favor! I promised Elise I’d help her get things set up, but with Eric sick I just can’t. Could you go a bit early and help her out?
GWEN
(Sighs.) If Elise needs help getting ready then I’ll go, and if I’m enjoying myself I’ll stay. But only if I’m enjoying myself.
JUNE
Wonderful!
JESS
You’ll love it! It will be great. I’ll call Elise when I get home and let her know you’re coming.
GWEN
Fine.
JESS
(Hugs Gwen.) Oh thank you friend! Now enjoy you’re day! Thank you thank you!
(Gwen walks with her to show her out.)
(Blackout)
SCENE 7
Downstage some card tables have been set up, there are a few kids and families there playing. Gwen is bringing a pile of board games out.
GWEN
(Sets the games on the table and the kids squeal with delight.)
ELISE
Thank you again for your help. I never could have gotten everything set up by myself in time.
GWEN
It was no trouble. Where’s Rob tonight though?
ELISE
Preparing for tomorrow! You know him, never stops correcting his sermon till it’s time to get up and preach it.
GWEN
(Laughs.) Of course.
ELISE
I did think there would be more people here tonight, but I’m sure more will come later.
GWEN
It’s a good turnout for a Saturday night. Don’t be too disappointed.
ELISE
Oh I’m not I just wish there were more people here are age, you know people you could talk too.
GWEN
I thought I was talking pretty well with you?
ELISE
(Laughs.) Yes that’s true. But you can talk to me anytime! I’m sure you were hoping to meet more people tonight. (At this point Rob has entered with his jacket on and briefcase he crosses to talk to Elise his wife.)
GWEN
You know I was hoping I might see some new faces here, but to be honest I’m far more comfortable getting to know these kids than talking with men. Thanks for trying Elise. I’m gonna go check on the pizza order. (Exits downstage right.)
ELISE
(Huffs)
ROB
(Rob is tall dark and handsome, a good compliment to his wife. They make an aesthetically pleasing couple. He is muscular and his eyes are soft. At the moment he has a distracted look on his face. He comes up behind Elise and touches her shoulder, she reacts instantly to his touch.)
Hey babe I think I’m-
ELISE
Robbie! Hun you didn’t have to come down, I know you’ve got a lot to finish. (Her tone is one of concern but it’s clear she’s excited to see him.)
ROB
Yeah, that’s the problem it’s way to loud down here. I can’t hear myself think upstairs. (Clearly irritated.)
ELISE
(Less excited.) Oh I’m sorry hun. I’m sorry what can I do? I didn’t realize the kids would be so loud. Do you want me to try and tone it down?
ROB
(Still irritated.) Right because that would work. No, I’m not gonna get anything done here tonight.
ELISE
(Getting excited.) Does that mean you’ll hang out down here with the boys and I?
ROB
(Less irritated but firm.) No babe I can’t. I’ve got way too much to finish still. I’m packed up so I’m gonna head home. Can you take care of the boys and tearing down this?
ELISE
Well it’s getting late and this goes till nine, the don’t the boys need to get too bed soon.
ROB
(Pulls her in for a hug.) Well we’ll let them stay up extra late tonight as a treat then!
ELISE
(Recoils some.) No you’ll let them stay up late, which is convenient since you don’t deal with getting them up in the morning.
ROB
(Softens briefly.) You’re right I’m sorry, that’s not fair to you. It’s just having them running around the house isn’t going to let me get work done either.
ELISE
(Starts moving to open up new games and responds without looking at Rob.) Yeah I know.
ROB
(Goes to Elise and takes her face in his hands.) Look at me, do you need me to take them home?
ELISE
No it’s fine (She disentangles herself again.) I’ve got it here, you go ahead home.
ROB
(Kisses her forehead.) Thanks babe, you really are the greatest! I’ll take the boys out after church tomorrow and you can have the afternoon all to yourself. (He moves to exit downstage right.) Don’t forget to lock up! (He bumps into Gwen as he re-enters and quickly apologizes.)
GWEN
(Crosses to Elise who is busying herself with games.) Pizza should be here in a half hour. Man, I hope we ordered enough, kids play hard and then eat hard.
ELISE
(Snaps.) It’ll be fine.
GWEN
(Looks concerned but lets it drop, Shelby has entered with Mrs. Preston and Gwen has spotted her, Shelby bounces merrily to a table and starts setting up Jenga.) Yeah you’re right I’m sure it will be. Let me know if you need anything more. (Gwen crosses to Shelby, as she does that Elise has to break up a fight between two little boys [her sons] when one of them hits the other she exits with him.)
GWEN
(To Shelby.) Hi there!
SHELBY
(Looks up.) Hi! What are you doing here?
GWEN
Well little miss this just happens to be my church too!
SHELBY
Really? (She laughs.)
GWEN
Yep! How’re you feeling? Not sick I hope?
SHELBY
(Shakes her head.) Nope! I’m feeling great and look (She raises her sleeve to show a bright purple bandaid.) they gave me a purple one!
GWEN
(Smiles.) That’s great, you know purple is my favorite color.
SHELBY
Mine too!
GWEN
(Smiles again.) What did you say you’re name was kiddo?
SHELBY
I didn’t. But it’s Shelby, and I’m seven.
GWEN
It’s nice to meet you Shelby who is seven.
SHELBY
(Giggles.) What’s you’re name?
GWEN
My name is Gwen.
SHELBY
Dr. Gwen.
GWEN
Nope it’s just Gwen to my friends kid.
SHELBY
(Giggles again.) I would like to be your friend!
GWEN
(Smiles at her.) That’s great! Cause I would like to be your friend too!
SHELBY
Do you want to play with me? (She motions to the Jenga game.)
GWEN
I would love to play with you! But I should warn you I’m pretty good at this game!
SCENE
Back at Guinevere’s living room, Gwen is returnin the game night. June is on the couch reading she gets very excited when Gwen gets home.
(Gwen enters from the front door.)
GWEN
Hey mom, I’m back.
JUNE
Well hello sweetheart! How was your night?
GWEN
(Falls down onto the couch tiredly but smiles.) It was great. I actually had a really good time.
JUNE
Oh I’m so glad to hear that. See I knew you would be glad you went! So what was so great about it?
GWEN
Well actually it was weird, there was this little girl who came into work yesterday and she needed a flu shot. I could tell she was nervous and scared-
JUNE
Poor dear.
GWEN
Yeah, so I talked to her a little bit and tried to cheer her up some. She was so sweet and so cute. And then she and her, (pauses) I think it’s her mother, were at church tonight.
JUNE
(Slightly less excited.) Hmm, what a coincidence.
GWEN
Yeah it was but we had a great time.
JUNE
Well I’m sure she was glad to see you.
GWEN
(Smiles again.) I think she was too.
JUNE
You’ve always been so good with children Gwen.
GWEN
Thanks mom.
JUNE
(Hinting.) It’s why I just can’t understand you’re delay on motherhood.
GWEN
(Sighs, but doesn’t let the comment get to her.) I know mom.
JUNE
(Letting it go.) Well tell me, did anything else happen? Was there anyone else there?
GWEN
(Pauses.) Nope it was pretty much just me and Shelby, but she kept me more than entertained. (Smiles.)
JUNE
Shelby?
GWEN
The little girl.
JUNE
Oh right yes. Hmmm.
GWEN
Maybe she’ll be at church tomorrow and you can meet her yourself. Mom she is just the cleverest little girl I’ve met in awhile.
JUNE
(Huffing.) And what about your niece Janessa?
GWEN
(Smiles.) Well obviously excluding Nessie.
JUNE
(Smiles.) That’s better. I can’t imagine she or Jill would be thrilled at you replacing her.
GWEN
(Laughs.) Well I’m just sayin’ it’s not my fault Nessie’s too busy for me!
JUNE
She is getting so big and so busy she hardly has time for anyone other than her cell phone.
GWEN
(Laughs hard.) Oh I have to take all the blame for that one. I’m the one who convinced Jill and Frank it was a safety necessity.
JUNE
(With false exasperation.) And I tried telling them that I survived and they survived fine without phones.
GWEN
(Still laughing.) Yep I have heard that lecture before. (teasing) And who is it that has the nicest phone in the family now?
JUNE
Well it’s the only way I can ever get a hold of any of you!
GWEN
So what you’re really saying is if you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em?
JUNE
(Smiling.) Maybe just this once.
GWEN
(Smiles back.) Well it’s a start. (Yawns.) I think I’m gonna pop in a movie and head to bed.
JUNE
What movie?
GWEN
The Family Stone, it’s kind of a Christmas movie.
JUNE
(With false reprimand.) Guinevere! And before thanksgiving even!
GWEN
I know I know. Don’t tell Jill!
JUNE
I won’t if you let me watch it with you.
GWEN
(Smiles.) Deal.
(Blackout)
END OF ACT 1
ACT 2
SCENE 1
Inside Gwen’s living room again. June is up and dressed sipping coffee at the table. There is a laptop open and she is scrolling on it. Gwen enters in a rush trying to put in earrings, she is dressed and ready for church but a bit late.
JUNE
(Calling from the table.) Good morning dear.
GWEN
(Yawning.) Morning mom. Okay so maybe a movie last night was not the best idea.
JUNE
(Snorts) And it was so sad. I would hardly call that a Christmas movie. I will be picking the next Saturday night flick we watch.
GWEN
(Roles her eyes at her mother as she heads towards the kitchen.) It doesn’t have to end happily to be a good movie mom. I’m gonna grab some coffee do you-
JUNE
No dear I already got it. And I know it doesn’t have to end happily, but that movie hardly put me in the Christmas spirit.
GWEN
(Re-entering with coffee, crosses to sit at the table) Kay, I’ll make a note of it.
JUNE
What time do we need to leave? Soon right? Can you drink that on the way?
GWEN
We’ll leave in a minute, (Grabbing the laptop) I’m gonna get online real quick.
JUNE
(Huffing) Well that was rude!
GWEN
(Staring intently at the computer screen) Sorry.
JUNE
Oh yes that sounded sincere.
GWEN
What in the heck is this? (Furiously begins scrolling and clicking and typing, June remains momentarily motionless, before taking her coffee cup and Gwen’s and exiting to the kitchen) Seriously how did this- MOM!?
JUNE
(Calling from the kitchen.) Guinevere I am right here, there is no need to shout.
GWEN
(Stands, begins pacing and breathing rather heavily.) Mom. I swear I’m only gonna ask you this once. What the heck did you do? And what were you thinking when you did it?!
JUNE
(Entering from the kitchen indignantly) What do you mean what did I do?
GWEN
Why do I have a welcome email from e-harmony.com in my inbox?
JUNE
(Brushing it off) Oh that! Sweetheart calm down.
GWEN
WHAT DO YOU MEAN ‘oh that’?! You created a DATING PROFILE for me?!?
JUNE
Guinevere I will not be shouted at.
GWEN
Then explain yourself.
JUNE
There’s nothing to explain.
GWEN
Yes yes there definitely is, like for starters, HOW THE HECK DID YOU EVEN KNOW HOW TO MAKE ONE OF THOSE???
JUNE
Guinevere stop shouting! Now… When Elise came over the other day while you were at work we got to talking and I just said I wished there were a way for you to meet more eligible good men, and then she brought it up. We worked on it together while you were at work. We were hoping to surprise with a date this weekend!
GWEN
Because my last surprise date from you two turned out so well.
JUNE
You can be so incredibly ungrateful sometimes Guinevere. I can hardly believe I raised you.
GWEN
UNGRATEFUL? What do I have to be grateful for? I didn’t ask you for this.
JUNE
You didn’t need too! Elise and I loved you enough to do it without you asking. And now that you’ve been so rude about it I have no idea why.
GWEN
Loved me enough? No mom, this is not love. This is not love at all. Love is respecting me as a person enough to not violate my property, privacy and will. Love is absolutely not trying to pawn me off to the next available bachelor without my consent. How dare you! How dare you both.
JUNE
Guinevere!
GWEN
What? Are you honestly going to defend yourself? Mom this was ridiculous, this was inexcusable, completely and entirely inexcusable. I opened my home to you, granted I didn’t have much of a choice, but still, and since arriving you have not only made me feel completely awful about the life I live but you have marched in and tried take it over from day one. Mom I’m not a teenager in need of discipline. I’m a grown woman who’s done pretty well for herself thanks to you and dad. And I have tried to understand your need to mother me. But this was too much, this was too far and this was THE last straw.
JUNE
Oh don’t be so dramatic.
GWEN
I’m not being dramatic I’m being serious. You have crashed down upon my home, my sanctuary and you have shown you have no reverence for me by completely violating my privacy and destroying my trust. You cannot and you will not stay here.
JUNE
Gwen…
GWEN
No. I’m leaving, I’m going to church. Pack what you need for the night and I will drive you to Jill’s when I get home.
JUNE
Guinevere,
GWEN
NO!
(Gwen exits slamming the door shut behind her)
(Blackout)
SCENE 2
(Upstage right: Set is bare, a few people are standing around. The only prop being the Bibles or purses in their hands.)
SHELBY
(Bounds up to Gwen who is still angry.) Hiya!
(Gwen jumps and looks startled but she softens toward the child as Mrs. Preston comes to stand behind Shelby.)
SHELBY
Surprised to see me? I’m not, I’m seein you everywhere all the time! And I’m so glad too you’ll make this place lots more interesting today! (She smiles brightly up at Gwen.)
(Gwen gives her a small smile her.)
MRS. PRESTON
(Grabs Shelby by the shoulders and looks down at her aghast.) Young lady how on earth can you say that. This is the Lord’s house and this is the Lord’s day we are not here for you to be entertained or find interesting things. Now I don’t want to hear anymore of that untamed tongue of yours. Remember what I told you last week? You ought to be seen and not heard!
SHELBY
Oh but Mrs. Preston how can I be friends with Gwen if I can only look at her! I have to talk.
MRS. PRESTON
(Opens her mouth but is cut off by Gwen.)
GWEN
Mrs. Preston, it’s okay. I love talking with Shelby, you never know what she’s gonna say. She’s just a kid, she doesn’t think and just says whatever’s on her heart. Lucky kid, I envy her.
MRS. PRESTON
Hmm. Try one afternoon with her. You’d envy that rambling mind a lot less.
GWEN
Really Mrs. Preston, I can stay with her till the service starts.
MRS. PRESTON
(Grabbing Shelby by the shoulders again.) Now you watch your tongue. You don’t want Dr. Gwen getting the wrong idea about you or anyone else here for that matter.
SHELBY
Yes ma’am.
(Mrs. Preston leaves to continue talking with her friends.)
GWEN
Well Shelby, I’m glad to have you here to keep me company. It’s been a long morning and I’m tired of talking to all these old women.
SHELBY
Yeah and I get tired of getting yelled at by that old woman (Points at Mrs. Preston.)
GWEN
Shelby, she’s just trying to teach you. She wants you to grow up into a fine young woman.
SHELBY
No she doesn’t. She hates me. And I don’t like her either.
(Church bells are heard.)
GWEN
Shelby, don’t talk like that. You’re never going to like someone if you’re always tearing her down. Now you run along and find your seat, the service is starting.
SHELBY
Well I’d much rather sit by you! (They have all begun walking toward upstage left, Shelby opens the large door and holds it open for Gwen to walk through, the Pastor and Mrs. Preston follow. There is a bench as the only prop where all but the preacher go to sit.)
GWEN
Shelby, you should sit with mother or whoever that is you came with. Now hush and run a long the service will start soon.
SHELBY
She ain’t-
GWEN
Isn’t
SHELBY
My mother! She’s Mrs. Preston!
ROBBIE
Well good morning to all of you and welcome to our service, it really is a blessing to have you all here with us today. We know that the rain may tempted many of you to stay indoors so we’re glad you fought that temptation and braved the storm to be here… We hope you are blessed and encouraged by our fellowship and time together. Now would you please stand for our opening song?
(As the Pastor is giving his welcome Mrs. Preston takes Shelby harshly and forces her to sit down. Shelby pouts and Mrs. Preston glares menacingly at her and whispers something into her ear. Upon hearing it Shelby jumps up and runs out of the service. The Pastor continues the welcome and invites the church congregation to stand for song. Gwen looks at Mrs. Preston expecting her to go after Shelby, when she doesn’t and as the first song begins Gwen walks out to find her. Gwen exits the doors and sees no one in the lobby, she exits through other doors to go outside. It’s raining, she looks up and down and tries to brush herself off before digging in her purse for an umbrella. She opens it and then looks right and left for Shelby before spotting her sitting curled up downstage right. She crosses to her.)
GWEN
Shelby! You are going to get terribly sick sitting here in the rain come back inside at once.
SHELBY
(Looks up at her defiantly.) I will not! I’m not going back in, I won’t do it and you won’t make me. (She sticks her tongue out and Gwen and then goes back to pouting.)
GWEN
(Softening a little.) Now Shelby, why won’t you come back inside where it’s warm? The sermon will be over in a bit and then you can go home. Come on now honey.
SHELBY
No. I won’t. She’s always so mean there. She says I have to be good and act good and look good and people must think I’m good when I am there. And good means I have to be happy. I’m not happy Gwen. And I’m especially not happy with her. She never talks to me and she won’t let me talk her. How can I be happy with someone who won’t talk to me Gwen? How?
GWEN
(Shocked and stumbling for words.) Shelby, that that can’t be true, I am sure that Mrs. Preston talks with you. I talk to you! So she must too.
SHELBY
She doesn’t talk to me and she doesn’t listen either. Not ever.
GWEN
Well just because she doesn’t talk to you doesn’t mean she doesn’t care for you. Sometimes, well sometimes it’s hard for people to talk. My mother and I, well we don’t talk a whole lot. It’s just too hard for us, you know? And that doesn’t mean I don’t care about my mother. I’m sure that’s just how it is with you and Mrs. Preston. I mean she is your, well she’s, she does care about you Shelby. I am sure of it. She’ll be worried if you stay out here and don’t come back inside.
SHELBY
No she isn’t and she would be mad at me if I went back in. I would be loud and wet. It would not have been good and people would see, people would wonder. (These last lines is said mockingly as if Shelby has heard it before. She pauses before continueing.) I should wait out here.
GWEN
Shelby, no one will stare. No one will wonder. You’ll walk in and you’ll sit with me. Now how would that be?
SHELBY
I don’t want too. I am not going back in there. I can’t.
GWEN
Shelby! It is pouring down rain, now tell me why you won’t come inside?
SHELBY
I told you, she’s meaner in there. And every week it’s the same; every week I make her upset. Every week I talk too much or too loud, I’m bad at church Gwen, but I don’t mean to be bad, I try to be good I do. I promise!
GWEN
(Silent and stunned for a moment, finally she leans down and pulls Shelby up and under her umbrella.) How about I just walk you home instead? You can wait for Mrs. Preston out of the rain at least.
SHELBY
(Nodding) Alright.
(They walk toward downstage left, walking close together under the umbrella to keep out of the rain, Shelby immediately looks up and asks-)
SHELBY
Gwen, may I ask you something?
GWEN
Of course Shelby, what?
SHELBY
Gwen, why don’t you talk to your mom?
GWEN
(Silent for a moment) Shelby, that’s a very complicated question. And my mother and I do talk, just not how we should.
SHELBY
But you just said you didn’t talk.
GWEN
I didn’t really mean that entirely, Shelby. We do talk, in our own way.
SHELBY
Do you just talk to her the way you have too? The way you are supposed too? The way that Mrs. Preston tells me to talk to the people at church?
GWEN
Now Shelby, I just told you that was complicated. But yes, a little bit, we talk that way. We talk about some things and not about others, even if we should talk about the other things it’s just easier for us not too. Just like it’s easier for Mrs. Preston to tell people she’s happy and you’re happy.
SHELBY
Oh, I think you should talk to her more, and you should tell her if you’re not happy, like how I just told you. You should talk to her about other things about all sorts of things. Hey you could play Jenga with her! And you could talk while you play! Mrs. Preston does talk to me more if she’s playing a game. It’s like she forgets it’s me or something.
GWEN
I wish it were that easy kiddo, I just can’t talk to my mother that way.
SHELBY
Why not?
GWEN
Well, she wouldn’t like it Shelby. She’s too determined. She makes up her mind about something and it’s set. It doesn’t really matter so much if I’m not happy. She wouldn’t really listen if I told her. She used to listen a bit more, but it’s different now that I’m older. I think right now she’s the one who really needs to feel listened too. So I try and listen Shelby as much as I can, but there’s just not a way for me to talk to her right now about some things. So I just listen and we talk about the other things.
SHELBY
So, did you used to talk to your mom, Gwen? Did you used to let her listen to you?
GWEN
(sighs) Yes, Shelby. I did, a long time ago.
SHELBY
Oh, well I bet she misses you talking to her like that, I bet she misses being able to listen to you.
(Gwen is clearly lost in thought, she’s not with Shelby mentally, she’s in her living room with her mother)
GWEN
I miss talking to her, I missed being listened too.
SHELBY
Well then fix it Gwen! Go home and talk to her today, tell her about church, tell her about me. I could come! I would help! I always have something to say!
(Gwen has returned to the moment.)
GWEN
(Laughs.) Yes, yes you always do. (She smiles at Shelby.) Maybe I will bring you sometime to meet my mother. I think she would like you.
SHELBY
(Smiling up at Gwen.) I would like that Gwen, I would like trying to talk to her.
(Pause.)
SHELBY
I like talking to you, Gwen, and I like that you talk to me.
GWEN
I like talking to you too, Shelby, very much. I haven’t had anyone to talk to for a while.
SHELBY
Now you have me, and I don’t get tired of tired of talking.
GWEN
So you’ve said.
SHELBY
(Pointing timidly.) There’s my house.
(They walk to the door <downstage left> and Shelby opens it.)
SHELBY
Will you come in and wait with me?
GWEN
(Falsely.) Well, I dunno, I do need to get-
SHELBY
(Tugging at her hand.) Please Gwen? Just for a minute please. (Shelby pulls Gwen through the door.)
(The living area is sparsely decorated. There is one couch and a desk. There is also a careworn rug on the floor.)
GWEN
(Closes the door behind her and looking around.) Well it’s so so cozy.
SHELBY
(Rolls her eyes at her.) Please Gwen. (Pause and then smiling brightly.) Hold on! I tried to make coffee this morning, I bet I can warm it up for you.
GWEN
(Mumbling to herself.) How can someone ignore and not talk to someone as dear and precious as that child. How can someone ignore her? (Pause.) Probably the same way you ignore your own mom. (Looking up.) I didn’t ask for this. I didn’t ask for a lecture or a lesson. My mom is not Shelby. My mom is not lovable, sweet and dear. My mom is hard, manipulative and critical. You try talking to her sometime. I’m doing my best.
SHELBY
(Running back in.) Here you are Gwen.
GWEN
Oh thank you! (She takes a sip.) You made this Shelby?
SHELBY
Yep, Mrs. Preston says it’s gonna be my job to make the coffee every morning.
GWEN
I see. It’s good, you’re off to a great start. How long have you lived here?
SHELBY
Oh since I was four, so awhile now. Mmmm three years.
GWEN
Mhmm. And why are you living with Mrs. Preston?
SHELBY
Because my mom and dad are dead. (Shelby turns away and begins fumbling with her coat, Gwen walks over and puts a hand on her shoulder.)
GWEN
(softly) Shelby, I am very sorry about your parents. (She crouches to her level and has her turn and face her) Very sorry. (She hugs Shelby) But why Shelby do you need to live with Mrs. Preston?
SHELBY
Because there ain’t-
GWEN
Isn’t
SHELBY
Anybody else. Mrs. Preston is my Aunt. Her husband was my daddy’s older brother. His only brother.
GWEN
Mmm. And what about your mom?
SHELBY
Mrs. Preston is always sayin that my momma’s family never liked my daddy. She says they hated him. And when they died they didn’t want me neither-
GWEN
Either
SHELBY
Because I was his baby. So that left me too the Preston’s.
GWEN
And where is your uncle now Shelby?
SHELBY
(Quietly and looking down.) He’s gone. He died. A little while ago.
GWEN
When?
SHELBY
(Still looking down.) I dunno. (She looks up) For awhile Aunt Lily, Mrs. Preston, was real sad. But now, I dunno. She’s just always mad, and mean.
GWEN
(Hugging Shelby.) Oh honey.
SHELBY
(Even more quietly.) She thinks it’s my fault Gwen. She thinks I killed him.
GWEN
(Still holding Shelby.) No, no she doesn’t.
SHELBY
Yes, she does. She’s never said that exactly. But it’s the way she looks at me. The way she talks to me. She thinks I was too much for him. All the time she says I’m too much for her. And she’s right! I made him tired! He would always take me out, always play and it made him tired. And then when he was too tired to play I just kept on talking to him, cause I loved him. Even if he couldn’t play I wanted him to know I still loved him. And Gwen, I know he loved talking to me too. I kept him happy while he was sick. He told me I did Gwen.
GWEN
Shhh, Shelby shh. Of course he loved talking to you. You’re uncle loved you. It sounds like he loved having you here. He loved having you as a daughter. Shelby you didn’t kill your uncle, it sounds like you made his last years here the best of his life.
SHELBY
I did?
GWEN
Yes, you did. You were his little sunshine Shelby!
SHELBY
(Smiles.) Do you think I could ever be Mrs. Preston’s little sunshine?
GWEN
(Smiles back at her.) Yes, Shelby. I do. She’s too tough because she’s hurting and she misses her husband so much that she can’t see the beautiful niece she has right in front of her. But one day she will.
SHELBY
(Smiles again.) Thanks Gwen.
(They hug again as Mrs. Preston enters.)
MRS. PRESTON
Here you are! Now what on earth were you thinking causing such a ruckus this morning. Didn’t you realize people would see? Yes and now I look like the worst Aunt whose ever existed but what on earth was I to do? Indulge your temper? Hardly. You are such an ungrateful spoiled child, and you acted that way too. What did I tell you just this morning about being good?
GWEN
Ahem.
MRS. PRESTON
(Turns to her.) Oh goodness. Thank you Dr. Gwen for walking her home. It was very kind of you. She should have had to wait alone in silence after that outburst but nevertheless I appreciate your kindness.
GWEN
Yes, well I’ll just head out now then. Walking Shelby home was no trouble, she was a bit of sunshine in the midst of this rain. (Winks at Shelby as she says this.) Have a lovely afternoon Mrs. Preston. Bye Shelby, see you soon!
(Blackout)
