My footsteps fall with a crunch, as I tramp through the nearly silent, predawn forest. The only sounds that float on the air are those of my gingerly obnoxious footfalls and the call of a single songbird as it preemptively declares the dawning of a new day. My pant legs already hang wet from the morning’s dew as I quicken my footsteps through the undergrowth on my way to witness one ...

Last night I had the opportunity to join hundreds of fellow Chicagoans as they gathered in the cold rain under the CNN sponsored Jumbo-Tron outside of City Hall, awaiting the outcome of this year’s fiercely fought presidential race. There were a couple of observations that I made while photographing history in the making.
I witnessed an intense atmosphere of Obama supporters(this is Chicago after all) as they cheered without inhibition when states were projected as wins ...

Calvin DeWitt is an acclaimed author, and environmental scientist. He is most well known for having been responsible, in large part, for increased awareness of the importance of environmental stewardship within the Christian community. Through his most recent book, Song of a Scientist: The Harmony of a God-Soaked Creation, DeWitt celebrates the splendors of God’s creation that have been entrusted to us. Through this book he demonstrates the biblical response to the witnessing of God’s ...

The medium of photography tells a story; it preserves a moment of the world around us in capturing what lies in front of the lens. Photography as an art captures many peoples attention, and as a Christian it is important to know what the Bible says about photography and the stories the photographs tells. This work will explore a Biblical view of photography looking into its place if any in an evangelical’s media repertoire and ...

Nature Photography is a medium, experience, and creative expression that I am passionate about. Through this essay I would like to discuss and defend my biblical motivation for partaking in the act of being a nature photographer, and producing images of God’s creation for the general public to view and enjoy. I believe that nature photography can and should be harnessed as a medium, experience, and final product in an effort to glorify God; and ...

We’re all familiar with businesses photoshopping models;
It’s become common for companies take pictures of women and shrink their stomachs, clear their blemishes, retouch their makeup, elongate their neck, make their arms thinner.
But what about CGI modified pictures?
An article was published today about the clothing company, H&M, and their practice of disembodying a model’s head from a picture, and then sticking it on top of a picture of a mannequin from inside the shop. No longer ...

Virtually every artistic medium can be distilled into one of two basic forms: verbal communication or visual communication. As the old adage goes, “A picture is worth a thousand words,” but I would venture to say that there are single words left vastly undefined by the attempt of ten thousand pictures. Similarly, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” At times the photograph is mightier than both. My goal is not to pit ...

What Marshall McLuhan has to do with Jesus Christ
II Corinthians 4:7-10
“But we have this treasure in jars of clay,
to show that the surpassing power belongs to God and not to us.
We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed; always carrying in the body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be manifested in our ...

I sat down yesterday and watched this incredible film which documented several artists as they created installment pieces in Sao Paulo Brazil. It was fascinating to see there creativity flow trough each others work. The film confirmed something that I’ve thought for a while now and that is the idea of convergence. With technology and style changing so rapidly and this continual push toward an all digital world, you see artists blending all forms of art into one. The ...

In a democratic society, the most powerful tool is the media. The media shapes our beliefs, changes our perspectives, and informs us on which choices to make at the ballot box. It can shape public opinion, create heroes, villains, and change elections. The media decides which voices are heard – or silenced, which issues ...
